Premature children, 12 months old
Study 1: Photoreceptor Function in Retinopathy of Prematurity
The study will involve one visit, in which your child will have visual acuity tested by completing a test called the Preferential Looking (PL) test - this will obtain a measure that is similar to what is recorded when an adult reads a letter chart.
Following this, your child will then complete the main portion of the study, the dark adapted threshold (DAT) test. We would ask you and your child to sit in a dark room for 30 minutes so that your child's eyes can adapt to the darkness. After 30 minutes, while your child is seated on your lap, your child would be shown dim spots of light on a screen and an observer will record their responses.
This study does not involve the use of dilation eye drops or anything touching the eyes. We would have your child participate at a time when they are between 11 and 13 months old, corrected for their prematurity.
The entire visit would last approximately one and one half hours, and you will receive a token payment and a Boston Children's Hospital parking voucher as compensation.
